Mass Murder and the Metrosexual reaction to the Westroads Mall massacre

Introduction

This is a long one and it is not pretty. It's not meant to be. It is meant to be as down and dirty as it is going to read, so go visit the restroom, grab a drink/snacks on the way back and strap yourselves in for a rough ride. If you don't have the stones to get through the whole thing then skip to the bottom of the page and read WHY I WROTE THIS before sticking your head back in the sand.
I am through mincing words. I do not suffer fools gladly and if this commentary doesn't get you away from the shallow end of the gene pool then you deserve what you get.

Some will call it fear-mongering. Wrong answer Dopey! If it is an unpredictable event that happens somewhere everyday (not just mass murder, but rapes, robberies and assaults) then it is not fear-mongering to tell someone they are WOEFULLY UNPREPARED for REALITY if/when brutality comes to call.

Will it ever happen to you? The odds are that it won't. I hope it never does. But how in the hell can you bet the lives of your spouse and kids that it won't? You are a lowlife scumbag fool undeserving of any kind of loving family if you are willing to make that bet.

I am not pulling any punches and if most of them land below the belt .... well that is where I was aiming. I am about to say what has needed to be said for a very long time, and it will be too unpleasant and graphic for some to read and it will be stated in the most unflattering of ways. For too long to many of us have been tip toeing around the issue with politically correct rhetoric that just doesn't impart the seriousness of being prepared to act when violence strikes.

Real Life Sucks sometimes

This is not a review for the latest video game, this is what real violence is. This is a public literary lynching of all the namby pambies (including the Westroads Mall Management and the UNICAMERAL) I hold accountable for the murders at Virginia Tech, SuccessTech Academy and the Westroads Mall this year.

Warning: If you are offended by what you read don't blame me it is your own conscience or lack of responsibility twisting your gut into knots. Sometimes it takes a literary baseball bat between the eyes is to get an Jackasses attention.

And yes I am pissed. Pissed off because, although some deaths may not have been prevented there is absolutely no doubt zip, zilch, nada, none in my mind that the irrational fear of an inanimate object prevented someone from ending it before the body count got high enough for the Murderer/s to cap his own ass.

Metrosexual?? - Less avoidance of femininity and the "emergence of a segment of men who have embraced customs and attitudes once deemed the province of women." Metrosexuals only made their appearance after cultural changes in the environment and changes in views on masculinity.

It used to be called Emasculation ...the word has also come to mean “to socially render a male less of a man,” .... (Wiki)

To put it bluntly it means your "umbilical cord hasn't been cut yet", "still tied to Mommy's apron strings" or "surrendering your manhood to someones purse".

The Politically Correct term is Girlyman and from recent comments on various blogs and message boards I gather that Metrosexuality is much more prevalent than I imagined.

The red words are comments made by individuals to one or more websites. My responses are in black. If by chance you read this and I have selected something you wrote, the answer is YES I am TALKING TO AND ABOUT YOU.

Everything about this situation is sad, but what bugs me the most is the mindset of more guns could of made this bad situation better.

What's really sad is that there was at least one knowledgeable firearms person at Westroads Mall, and several at Virginia Tech that could have stopped it practically before it started but were not in possession of a sidearm. What part of mass murders did not happen when it was accepted as a natural thing for men/women to carry firearms . This relatively new phenomena began shortly after "Gun Free Zones" started sprouting up like orange barrels in the Springtime. When there were more guns this shit didn't happen. Interesting huh?

In years past when some miscreant yanked out a shooter and began to massacre innocent citizens, good people (men and women) drew guns shot the dirty bastard down like a rabid dog. They didn't try to get in touch with his inner child or query him about an abused childhood or any other psycho babble bullshit about why. They shot his ass down and saved lives.

If more guns wouldn't make this bad situation better, then why in hell should the cops even bother to show up with guns? After it is all over even. Six minutes is the response time the press is reporting .... that is pretty damn fast. I don't think they could have done better. But then the Murdering Bastard was already dead by his own hand before they got there. No it is not their fault, they did everything humanly possible to get there as fast as they could.

Westroads had unarmed security guards on duty ... well whoop ti do da frickin day. What were they suppose to do? They turned tail and ran .. just like everyone else tried to do and I for one don't blame them one gall darned bit. There wasn't anything they could be expected to do against a rifle with a stick, some handcuffs and a can of cooking spice.

So what if someone had a handgun with them that just would have raised the possibility that they would have over reacted missed and or shot the wrong person. Guns of any place have no business in public.

Got a new word for you Skippy; it's called projection. You know, when you lack the confidence in your own abilities you make up for those short comings by projecting them on everyone else. In your mind it makes everyone equal so you can feel better about yourself. Oh it is precisely because so many ego challenged Girlymen like you have an irrational fear of guns and banned them from public places that we have these Mass Murders. Why is that so hard for you to understand? No need to answer that ... I just did.

Oh and by the way, a nationwide study found that only 2 percent of civilian shootings involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal. The “error rate” for the police, however, was 11 percent, over five times as high. In defending themselves with their firearms, armed citizens kill 2,000 to 3,000 criminals each year, three times the number killed by the police.

Does that resonate somewhere in your feeble excuse for a brain? Private citizens are forced to kill 3 times more murdering bastards every year than cops and they are 5 times less likely to shoot the wrong person.

Why would I want more guns being used when someone is already shooting at me with one?

To save your life Bonehead; unless you and yours can run 2,500 feet per second. So what do you plan on doing if someone starts shooting at you with one? Out run your family? Use your body to protect them so they can watch you coughing up blood as your eyes glaze over choking on your last breath? Superman you ain't so pay attention here; The Westroads Mall Murderer was using a rifle, the bullets would pass completely through your macho ass and take out which ever spouse or kid you are cowering over too. Two dead bodies for the price of one bullet huh?

There's an image every kid should take to bed with them at night; the last time they saw their Father his chicken shit body was ripped with bullets and his blood flowing out all over the floor. Got your life insurance paid up Sparky?

Worse than that what about the image you may go to sleep with every night for the rest of your life; Your running with one or more of your kids and/or spouse a few steps ahead of you when suddenly a cloud of red mist explodes directly in front of one of them. As they tumble to the ground/floor a pool of warm life force blossoms out around the now still form. In that one fraction of an instant your whole world shatters as you hear the faint rasp "Daddy help me, I hurt". POWERLESS to do ANYTHING you know what just happened and it feels like you have just been run over by a cement truck. Quick .... Do you stop and kneel at the fallen hoping the next round doesn't take out another kid or you? Do you scoop them up on a dead run?

Fear mongering????? As I write this a grieving father lays in a Colorado hospital after losing his two teenage daughters from the SAME shooting in which he was twice wounded Sunday.

I'll tell you what you will want because I have heard it over and over from people that have been lucky enough to live through violence. You will want a gun. You will cry for a gun. You will pray for a gun. You would offer up your soul for a gun to save your wife/husband and kids.

You'll be running like a scared little sheep trying to herd your family out of danger all the while praying "Oh how I wished I had a gun, oh please let us be spared, oh I feel so helpless, how I wish I could do something to save my wife/husband and kids, please someone with a gun stop this madness."

But then it wouldn't do you any good would it? Because of your irrational fear of an inanimate object you wouldn't have practiced the skills to function with it and you'd probably end up dead anyway. That is what his is really all about isn't it. You lack the gumption to do what is necessary to protect yourself and your family so you harbor an unhealthy jealousy for those that do.

All it is going to do is raise the risk that I or my loved ones will get shot if there are twice as many bullets flying around the mall.

Raise the risk?? Statistically about the only way you or your loved ones will get shot by a Private Citizen protecting him/herself is if your running at the Mass Murder in question. If that is the case your too stupid to even have kids let alone a gun.

The chances that they will react fast enough to shoot the guy are slim and none.

Bullshit now your just making stuff up. Cite your sources Einstein! Since you'd likely just stand there with warm piss running down your leg you assume everyone else would do the same. Your projecting again.

Plus I don’t care how good a person is at shooting a hand gun on a shooting range trying to shoot a guy when you are in that situation is completely different.

The massacre at the Mall lasted nearly six minutes and you don't think that anyone could react fast enough? By the way how the hell do you know so much about how everyone else is going to act? You don't, you and Skippy need to need to address your dysfunction with projection.

Even if Westroads didn’t ban concealed guns, it’s a stretch to claim that anyone else with a gun on them would have had time to react, much less take out the shooter, before it was all over.

Hey Spanky you might want to check out this News Video. That incident lasted mere seconds and the good guy won. He is unharmed and his family is alive because he was something your not .... Prepared. The massacre at Westroads lasted MINUTES. Just because you have "no ability to act under stress" issues it doesn't mean the entire human race plagued with your short comings.

If one gun is causing a problem, adding additional guns isn’t any kind of solution. Unless you want to add 10 or 20 more people to the body count.

During the time this was being written a woman church volunteer with a concealed carry license in Colorado put a stop to another potential mass shooting. Guess what mathematician; YOUR WRONG. 10 to 20 more??? How about a total of 3 including the Murdering Bastard.

The Leaders of the second Church heard about the first Church shooting and took precautions that INCLUDED guns.

WHY I WROTE THIS

Okay now, take a couple of really deep breaths exhaling slowly and pay real close attention.

I know at a very deep personal level what I hope none of you ever have to learn. What it takes to survive a violent encounter. I never want anyone to ever have to go through that and I will resort to cheap shots, personal insults, bizarre references to body parts and anything else I think I need to get you to understand that

As much as you want to sugar coat it with politically correct words at cocktail parties about "how it can never happen to me or my family" or until it happens to you, you will never understand the serious need to be prepared for a violent encounter.

They are random. They happen all across this country at anytime, anywhere everyday. If they were predictable they could be stopped.

For all you Macho testosterone laden "I will fight to the death for my .....but I don't/won't need a gun do do it" metrosexuals; Yea right! How in hell do you think your going to do that? Against an armed assailant (and they mostly all are these days) all you will succeed in doing is getting a knife ripping into your torso cutting into your vital organs and draining your vital fluids. Or a couple of bullets slam into your chest tearing ragged holes through your lungs and heart. And tonight your kids will have one less parent and your spouse will be a Widow/er.

If you stayed with me all the way to the bitter end I hope by now you realize how udderly ignorant you sound. I don't want you to die, I don't want anything to happen to any member of your family.

I hope by now you realize that violence can occur at any place any time and it is not only your responsibility IT IS YOUR DUTY to be prepared for it and protect yourself and your loved ones as ferociously as you can with every tool available to you.

Westroads Mall update

In my previous post I made assertions that would be born out in the days that followed the Westroads Mall Murders.

I am not psychic and it did not take long.

It wasn't that hard really, since it is the same every time.

1) In his mind he was dead already, he went there to stop the heart beat

2) He fell through the cracks

3) Friends and family extol his virtues

4) He was off his medication

5) He lost his job

6) He is getting his 15 minutes of fame

The only thing I got wrong so far is I didn't mention the wife/girlfriend. Oh and I haven't heard yet whether he ever sang in the church choir.

7) Politicians are already dancing in the blood of the murdered calling for more gun control laws.

8) A firearms familiar customer WAS close enough to see the empty brass ejecting from the gun and reported that had he a sidearm with him he had several seconds to end the carnage. See Comments to previous post

9) A law abiding citizen with a legally carried firearm COULD have stopped it

I am not writing this to blow my own horn, nor am I writing this as an "I told you so", I am writing this to demonstrate that every mass murder in recent memory all have certain things in common.

They have all been perpetrated by a troubled unloved young male with "nothing to live for" and a desire to take as many people with him as possible to insure he gets in death the 15 minutes of fame he never could achieve in life.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing all of these events have in common is that they took place in a "Gun Free Zone".

Do you understand the significance of that?

Whether on purpose or by accident everyone of these Murdering Bastards chose a place that the property owners/managers had;

For the Murdering Bastards convenience hired unarmed security (who could only cut & run along with everyone else) and disarmed law abiding American citizens.

1) You anti-gun morons want high body counts so that you have that much more blood to dance in?

Well you got them.

2) You wanted law abiding citizens disarmed?

Well you got them.

From Virginia Tech to SuccessTech Academy to the Westroads Mall this year alone your irrational fear of firearms has aided and abetted every single murder perpetrated by these 3 pariahs.

You made it possible for most of those people to die, their blood is on your hands and you will never ever be able to wash it off.

What we know now is that there are MORE people dead or wounded than there needed to be because decent law abiding citizens have been denied the ability to fight back by a bunch of pantywaist Socialist Morons.

That is right I used the word Socialist.

You promulgate the same restrictions, confiscations and government dependence that Stalin, Hitler and an untold number of Despotic rulers have done.

By my definition that makes one a Socialist and that in my opinion is contrary to every principle this Country was founded on.

Westroads Mall a safe working environment for Wackos

As most know by now the Westroads Mall in Omaha was the scene of a tragic massacre this afternoon. This is just another "Dead Man Walking" incident that I have alluded to in past postings.

"Channel 6 News has confirmed that a 19-year-old Sarpy County man left a suicide note this afternoon stating, "I'm going out in style.""

In the mans own mind he was dead before he ever arrived at the Westroads Mall. He went there to stop his heart beat. He also knew he would be the only one armed and he was free to rack up a large body count before being shot by responding Peace Officers or saving the last bullet for himself.

In death he will get the fifteen minutes of fame that he craved in life.

That is the way of the loser

I am sure in days to come we will be inundated with the usual media blitz about "He fell through the cracks", "Oh what a wonderful young man this was", "How he was an abused child", "He was off of his medication" "He lost his job" or that he "sang in the church choir" or some other inane drivel about how it is society's fault. The truth is the guy is a loser and for what ever reason he could not cope with what life handed him and took the losers way out.

The other thing that is going to happen (every time) is the media, politicians and the pantywaist cowards will be dancing in blood of these unfortunate victims calling for more strict gun control.

They will use this event as an example of why we need more laws.

How in the hell do all you stupid people think that more laws will stop shit like this when the 20,000 already passed have not done it? Don't you ignorant fools realize that the only ones that obey your stupid laws are those that obey the law and do not commit crimes like this anyway.

Guns laws kill people.

The management of that property has signs posted at all of the entrances that might just as well read;

"Criminals, Psychos, and Gang bangers for your protection all of our patrons have for your convenience have been disarmed. Please consider this a safe work environment in which you can rob, rape, steal, maim, shoot, wound and murder as many of our customers as possible."

Those signs only stop legally licensed citizens from carrying a firearm in that building. Those signs have never stopped anyone intent on committing crime from carrying firearms there.

Yes I am going to say it

By denying citizens the Right to keep and bear arms you are aiding and abetting the criminal element and wackos in the commission of their crimes.

Do you understand that?

In my opinion you are as much responsible for the murder and shooting of those people as the guy that pulled the trigger and should be held legally accountable for such actions.

An irrational fear of an inanimate object and the ignorant passage of laws to regulate that object killed those people and countless others before today. As long as there are laws forbidding law abiding citizens access to the tools they need to fight back when something like this happens there will be an untold number of more an deaths.

Think what you want but I believe that with every fiber of my being. You made it possible for the shooter to go about his killing spree without fear.

Understand this;

I do not care how many laws you pass, how many guns you ban or how much other feel good legislation you enact it will only be obeyed by those inclined to be law abiding citizens. Criminals by virtue of their mindset and job description will not ever obey any of your silly feel good laws.

The fact that you deny law abiding citizens the ability to protect themselves and their loved ones will only contributes to the problem.

What If?

Did any of the patrons there at the time have a concealed carry license? Don't know yet.

If they did and being law abiding citizens was their firearm left in their motor car or at home because they knew they were going to the mall? Don't know yet.

Could a law abiding citizen with a legally licensed concealed firearm have stopped the rampage thus savings lives like any number of people said they could have at the Virginia Tech shooting? Don't know. We shall see, but if there is don't count on it being reported in the Main Stream Media.

What we do know is that the Westroads gunman went about his spree unchecked because there was no one there with the tools to stop him.

Might there have been someone that would have been at the mall but wasn't because they refuse to patronize any place that has an established "Victim Disarmament Zone"? I doubt we will ever know the true answer to that one.

What we do know is that there are a lot of people dead and wounded because they were denied the ability to fight back.

Yes I believe they are dead because the management of that mall, our politicians, the Brady Bunch and the Million Commie Mommies went to great lengths to ensure that they could not fight back.

How Safe are you?

Look around the City/Town you live in, how many businesses and government agencies have established a "Safe working environment" for Criminals, Psychos and Gang bangers to make you the next Victim?

If you feel safer because the building you are in has a "Victim Disarmament sign" you are deluding yourself with a false sense of security that may someday get you killed.

But hey at least you don't have to worry about me or any one the other countless law abiding citizens I know harming you. We are not like that. We carry for defensive purposes only and we do not patronize those places unless we absolutely have and obey the law when we do.

But then again if the shit hits the fan the way it did today at the Westroads Mall we won't be there to save your ignorant "all nobody should be allowed to protect themselves in public gun control laws are good" crybaby ass either.

This is what happens when you restrict the ability of people to protect themselves.

No legal concealed carry will not stop all of these types of events. Until however, you simple minded Morons wake up and realize the truth they will continue to have large numbers of dead and dying because there is not a legally licensed citizen with a concealed firearm to stop them.

Financial Liability for No Guns Allowed signs? GRPC Notes #3

Background

Chunk Klein, along with a few others successfully challenged the status quo on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms in Ohio several years ago. This challenge led to the passage of a concealed carry law in Ohio. Until that time there were no provisions for concealed carry in the Buckeye State and those that openly carried a sidearm were often charged with something akin to "disturbing the peace" or "inciting a panic". There was nearly no way a citizen in Ohio could legally exercise the Right to Keep and Bear Arms without running afoul of the law.

Ultimately the state Supreme Court ruled that those in power could not have it both ways;

No statutory allowance for concealed carry and punishment for open carry.

It had to be one or the other

Since there were no provisions in statute that recognized concealed carry without penalty, the only way for citizens to "legally" exercise their Right to bear arms was to openly carry them on their person and NOT be subject to arrest, punishment intimidation and harassment.

This decision amounted to a cease and desist order on Ohio law enforcement charging those who openly carried a sidearm for personal protection with a crime.

From that decision large numbers of Ohioans held "Open Carry Walks".

Right to Keep and Bear Arms supporters across the state held very peaceful walks, in major population centers, while openly carrying sidearms. These walks were informative and brought national attention to the issue. They were also heavily monitored by the many law enforcement agencies.

They Still didn't get it

While there were no overt acts by Peace Officers to prevent or intimidate the exercise of a pre-existing Right recognized in both the Ohio State and Federal Constitution there were several reports that citizens leaving the walks were singled out and covertly set upon by Peace Officers engaging in tactics of intimidation.

I do not believe that there were any arrests, but several citizens reported that after leaving the march they were singly accosted, detained and investigated for exercising a Right that the Supreme Court of the State of Ohio had recently affirmed.

Even someone that barely eked out a passing grade in a High School Government class should realize the implications of that action and be appalled by it.

What part of;

The Supreme Court of the State of Ohio mandated that the open carry of a firearm in the state of Ohio is a legal activity affirmed by the Ohio State Constitution.

did they not understand?

What those few officers did is the same as stopping a person for, "driving the speed limit", "properly using turn signal devices" or "making a complete stop at a stop sign/light".

As noted above the Supreme Court decision and the open Carry walks ultimately led to the passage of Concealed Carry in Ohio. A provision in the law, and in many other states as well, allows those responsible for private property to post signs that deny employees and consumers the ability to legally carry a firearm on their premises.

Although the Politically Correct term for these areas is "Gun-Free Zones", legally armed law-abiding citizens refer to them as "Victim-Disarmament Zones". The rightful conclusion is that since armed criminals by virtue of their job description do not obey the law the only people who comply are "defenseless law-abiding victims".

A Book on the Subject

Since that time Chuck Klein has written a book entitled "Guns in the Workplace", A Manual for Private Sector Employers and Employees.

It is not an understatement that this book should be read by everyone one that owns their own business. Additionally business owners should make it required ready for their entire Human Relations Departments if their business is large enough to require one.

As I have oft stated in the past, should I encounter a "No Firearms allowed sign" in my travels I, as a law abiding citizen, will respect the wishes of that management and not patronize their establishment.

It is not a protest or boycott on my part;

It is simply an expression of respect for the Rights of that property owner/manager and my own ethical standards on obeying the law.

Klein's book, edited by William M. Gustavson Esq., is an excellent "how to" manual for those that are struggling with the idea of employees and consumers legally carrying firearms on their property. The book carefully examines both sides of the decision to allow it or not.

The most interesting aspect that I gleaned from the book concerns the financial liability that a business may incur if they decide to prohibit the legal carry of firearms on their property.

Klein indicates that should harm occur that could have been prevented had that person been in possession of their legally carried firearm, the business could be financially liable in a civil action brought by that person or person/s survivors for failure to provide or allow for adequate protection.

In essence by denying a person, that is legally able to carry a firearm, from possession of a firearm on that property that business is acknowledging that they have assumed responsibility for the safety and protection of, not just the firearm owner but, all persons that either work or patronize the premises.

Klein writes that in some states statutes have been written "exempting" businesses from such liability when they declare their property a "Gun-FreeZone". He points out however that courts generally do not favorably view a for profit business being free from liability for intentionally restricting the ability of law abiding citizens to provide for their own safety and protection.

Klein goes on to reference the Federal Liability Statute (USC Title 42 , Chapter 21, Sub chapter 1) that;

...... causes to be subjected, any citizen or other person within the jurisdiction thereof to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured by the Constitution and laws, shall be liable to the party injured in an action at law, suit in equity, or other proceedings for redress ...

In other words the federal law will trump the state law and businesses that post their properties relying solely on the state statute to protect them could still be liable for financial losses.

Intentional Acts are not covered by most Policies

This has led many to believe that we are covered by the "well that is what I have insurance for" axiom.

Again Klein cautions those responsible for making the "Gun-free Zone" decision to consider;

Most insurance policies have an exclusionary for "intentional acts" committed by those covered by the policy.

Preventing the exercise of a Right by a property owner/manager is an INTENTIONAL ACT.

If faced with a large monetary suit it would be reasonable to expect that any insurance company would divest themselves of any financial obligation by asserting that the covered party "intentionally" violated the terms of the policy. In this event, not only would the owner/manager be financing two law suits (one against themselves for deprivation of a right and the one they would need to bring against their insurance carrier for non-coverage/payment) any and all monetary cost/award would fall squarely on the assets of the policy holder.

Should the business, that the insurance company successfully bails on, be a corporation, limited liability or otherwise the business might be financially challenged or even ruined, but personal possessions of the owners might remain un-effected.

Conversely if the entity in question is a "Sole Proprietorship" or other "unprotected entity" any of the personal property assets of the owner, such as vehicles, jewelry, homes and other personal property would be subject to forfeiture and/or liens.

As evidenced by Chucks book there is important serious consideration that must be done by any property owner/manager when making the decision to post a property as a "Gun-Free Zone" or not.

As far as this issue is concerned I, and every law abiding firearms owner that I know, respect the decision whether it is to allow or deny. That is their Right.

I would suggest that anyone faced with the enormous responsibility of deciding this issue to not take it lightly, read Mr. Klein's book, consult jointly with legal counsel and insurance provider/s for advice and make the most responsible decision possible based on that information.

If that decision is to post "No Guns Allowed" signs and it is grounded in the best legal advice and a WRITTEN GUARANTEE OF COVERAGE conformation letter from an insurance provider then I will respect that.

Should the decision be to not post any signs at all or even post "Citizens legally carrying firearms welcome" signs (as some businesses do), I will respect that as well and show my appreciation for the recognition of a Right by patronizing the establishment.

As a final note I followed the progress of Klein's lawsuit and the resulting open carry walks when all of that took place. It was not until this years Gun Rights Policy Conference when Chuck was one of the featured speakers that I finally got to meet him.

GRPC Notes #1

The 22nd Gun Rights Policy Conference was held this past weekend at the Draw Bridge Inn in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky which is just over the Ohio state line near Cincinnati. In following posts I hope to write more commentary on topics addressed by the various speakers.

Gun Control laws Kill people

On Saturday morning Larry Pratt (Gun Owners of America) opined gun control laws contributed to the Virginia Tech tragedy. That observation is confirmed by a number of faculty and students from Virginia Tech. I will respectfully disagree with Larry on one salient point;

It is not the laws themselves that contributed to the event they are only words on a page. Rather it is the people responsible for the creation and enactment into law of those written words that contributed to the massacre.

Of course the Mainstream Media never reported that.

Faculty and Students (over age 21) with legally issued Virginia Concealed Carry Permits affirmed that had they (in different places, at different times obviously) been able to legally posses their firearms on campus any number of lives would have been saved.

You can Monday morning armchair, wail and gnash your teeth all you want to, but these folks lived through it, they were there they ought to know.

Back in April I penned a missive on this blog entitled Reflections on a Tragedy. In it I discussed being aware of what is going on around you and some things to do if you find yourself in a similar situation. In the comments section I was taken to task for a few of the remarks I proffered.

How would people be conditioned to respond to a massacre? should they be given 2 weeks of basic training before, say, high school?

The answer is no and I think I elaborated on that point fairly well throughout the rest of that post. The essence of which is to be cognizant of what is happening around you. Get your eyes off the ground, unscrew that cell phone from your ear and PAY ATTENTION. Paying attention (Situational Awareness) allows you in most cases to spot trouble from a distance and avoid it. No one needs special training.

Quit acting like a victim.

Bad people in honing their craft recognize by repetition certain traits that clue them into who is an easy target and who is not. They didn't have a boot camp to teach them that, it is a skill they develop naturally. (unless they get caught and get a full scholarship to Criminal U.)

Likewise people that refuse to be victims just as naturally develop their own set of skills.

It is called Situational Awareness.

Is this not what we pay taxes for?

In answer to the first question it is an absolute and unequivocal No.

I thought the reason we paid for police and military was so that they could "protect the homeland".

The Military may protect the Homeland from foreign aggression but under most circumstances they are prohibited from enforcing civilian law.

As for the Police I have addressed this in the past as well;

Peace Officers are under no legally required duty or obligation to protect citizens as individuals. Law Enforcement organizations by definition exist only to protect the public as a whole. (crowd control, accidents, public disturbances, reckless endangerment).

Bowers v. Devito

(There is no constitutional right to be protected by the state against being murdered by criminals or madmen. It is monstrous if the state fails to protect its residents against such predators but it does not violate the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, or, we suppose, any other provision of the Constitution. The Constitution is a charter of negative liberties; it tells the state to let the people alone; it does not require the federal government or the state to provide services, even so elementary a service as maintaining law and order.); (No duty to protect) = Rule 12(b)(6) Motion to Dismiss;Cf.

Warren v DC

In a carefully reasoned Memorandum Opinion, Judge Hannon based his decision in No. 79-6 on "the fundamental principle that a government and its agents are under no general duty to provide public services, such as police protection, to any particular individual citizen." See p. 4, infra. The duty to provide public services is owed to the public at large, and, absent a special relationship between the police and an individual, no specific legal duty exists.

And that isn't the only one folks there is nearly a dozen more.

Note: Again as I have said before, Police Officers are some of the most dedicated, under paid and over worked people I know, and there is not one I know that would hesitate to put their life on the line for a fellow citizen.

There are some caveats that go along with that though;

They have to know you need them - if you cannot complete a 911 call how the hell are they going to know you need help or where you are for that matter.

They have to be free to respond - there are only so many Cops on duty at any one time if they are busy assisting a problem more serious than yours they can't immediately respond until they have control of that situation.

Should I tell my disabled grandmother or my 2 year old niece that it's up to them to stop the next 9/11 or the next VA Tech massacre?

Yes you need to tell your disabled grandmother and the parents of your 2 year old niece that they are without a doubt responsible for their own safety.

Do you honestly think that when you call government sponsored dial-a-prayer (911) that a cop is going to be instantly teleported to your assistance.

Exactly how realistic is that?

Get real folks when something bad happens to you it won't matter whether you are a disabled grandmother or someones 2 year old niece Peace Officers will not be there. The average response time, providing they know where to go, in Lincoln, Nebraska is on the order of 7-15 minutes. If I were to bet on it I would say 10-12 minutes.

Even if you can get a call to a police dispatcher and even if your cell phone is GPS capable how much harm can come to you in 7-15 minutes? Oh and 911 calls do on occasion fall through the cracks.

Chances are you were not practicing situational awareness and never saw it coming. In that case the cell phone you are so sure will receive that teleported Cop will be bitch slapped from the side of your head before you can even dial the 9 in 911.

Then what are you going to do? Bleed? Die?

10 minutes, hell 1 minute alone is a very long time in a violent situation.

Understand this;

Even if you completed a call to 911 you are ON YOUR OWN until any kind of help can arrive. The lives and safety of you and your family depend solely on what you do in those precious moments.

Just Co-operate and you won't get hurt

That may have been good advice a long time ago, but times change and so does advice. Todays robbers, muggers and rapists are becoming more violent. In an increasing number of crimes modus-Operandi appears to be "Immediate physical violence". This is done to establish control, exert dominance and reduce the likelihood of resistance before the demand of credit cards/cash/keys/vagina is issued.

Don't believe me? How about the media? Everyday there are news stories from somewhere in the United States that read (or words to the effect);

The Victim - I was not even aware of the thug until they walked up and stabbed/shot/knocked me.

I fail to see how a potential gun shootout between a killer and one or more usually un-trained vigilantes is going to make schools, workplaces, etc. safer and think this is a totally unrealistic option. It's typical libertarian pie-in-the-sky wishful thinking that has no basis (that I'm aware of) in reality.

I reject the words untrained and vigilante in that statement. Does that mean anyone with a fire extinguisher is a wannabe fireman? A first aid kit a wannabe Doctor? A spare tire a wannabe auto mechanic? The firearm is is just another safety precaution that people with concealed carry permits know how to employ but hope they never need to.

No, citizens that have a state issued Concealed Carry Permit do not have the untold hours that sworn Peace Officers have.

Why? Because they don't need it. DUHHHH!!!!

Peace Officers are charged with RESPONDING to situations that they have too little knowledge of. When they arrive they know not the difference between the good and the bad. The training they receive is what helps them sort the wheat from the chaff.

As private Citizen with a concealed firearm do you honestly and truly believe that you need 100,000 hours of training to recognize the thug/s standing right there in front of you wielding a ball bat/knife/gun belligerently requesting your wallet/vagina/car keys is or is not a danger to your life.

Please tell me you are not that dense. Is it really that hard to understand or do you finally get it now?


On a side note, I hear about the potential for vigilantes to step up and stop these types of massacres, but I'm not aware of it having ever happened. Do you know of any instances where it has actually happened?

It would be easy to slough this one off with;

Since legally licensed law abiding citizens are forbidden from carry on Americas campi and by definition they obey the law and leave their firearms etc...

The real answer is yes it has happened, but almost never mentioned in the Mainstream Media.

Here are three examples of just incidents that took place at schools complete with Lexis-Nexis search results:

Pearl High School - Pearl Mississippi 1997 and A Middle School - Edinboro, Pennsylvania 1998

Ever wonder why most of these "School Shootings" end in suicide?

Because it is an integral part of their plan from the start.

1. Acquire arms and ammunition (usually illegally)
2. Select a location that will allow for a headline grabbing large body count. (places where no one else will be armed schools/posted malls/concerts etc..)
3. Commit suicide either by own hand or by cop.
4. Die knowing that if not in life in death 15 minutes of fame will be achieved. (Just to insure that fame next day express papers and video to the media prior to commencing the act) (Gee thats never happened has it?)

Peace Officers as a rule can not stop something like that.

Not that they don't want to, because I know every single one of them does. Unless the "shooter" attacks a Police Station it is almost always over before they get there. To survive it is up to the people there to defend themselves until Peace Officers can arrive.

It always seems to me these issues are dealt with by gun freaks from a hypothetical viewpoint (not based in actual history or reality). If you can give me a couple of examples where gun owners have actually been able to repel a mass murderer as he was engaged in a killing spree, I'd be very interested in hearing about them.

There are lots more examples based in actual history or reality, I just gave you three and they all involved Schools. Now you didn't know that because you didn't see it in the Mainstream press. Like so many people you must believe; If it isn't on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN etc.. that it can't, didn't or won't happen. Honest law abiding citizens with firearms use them to protect themselves and families everyday in the United States, but since most of the Press is so bias against guns they will not report that. They can't. It goes against every thing they believe in.

Now I have a question for you;

How can they (the Media) justify their anti-gun mantra in they report the over one million times a year that firearms in the hands of private citizens save lives, stop crimes and bring mass public shootings to a screeching halt?

So much for gun freaks with hypothetical viewpoints aye?

I hope you paid particular attention to the results of the Lexis-Nexis search in those stories. You never knew those incidents were stopped by armed private citizens because the Media in order to protect their agenda REFUSED to tell you. Fair and Balanced? I think not.

The Mainstream media is largely anti-gun and it should be obvious from just those few examples that they are loathe to report on anything that puts firearms in a positive light.

I hope that some what lays to rest the idea that Law abiding citizens with concealed carry permits are untrained vigilante gun freaks with hypothetical points of view.

I also hope it opens some eyes to the fact that;

Peace Officers WILL respond to your rescue, even though they are not required to, as soon as they know where you are and what the problem is. But from the onset of the crime committed against you until they arrive, which in some cases can be minutes or even hours, you are on your own. For the continued well being of yourself and family you must be prepared to act.

Laws do not stop anyone from committing a crime.

Laws are obeyed only by those that are predisposed to societal conformity anyway. They exist then ONLY as a punishment for those that are not so inclined.

Reflections on a Tragedy

In the wake of the tragedy at Virginia Tech there has been a lot of media posturing from both sides of the firearms for personal protection issue.

Now that a bit of time has passed I want to make a few observations.

An individual determined to cause as much havoc as possible in the shortest amount of time possible will not be deterred by any law, rule or regulation. There is no law that can be past that will prevent this from happening again. To many people died Monday because A) They had not been conditioned to respond to an event like this B) They were not allowed to possess the necessary tools to protect themselves and C) They were raised to believe that it is the Governments job to protect them.

There are a number of school shootings BECAUSE the shooter knows that there is likely no one there to shoot back thus ending the carnage before the maximum planned effect can be realized.

How many existing laws or rules were broken?

It was against school policy for students and faculty to possess firearms on campus. Mondays maniacal marauder violated that on two counts.

At various times prior to and during the rampage the firearms were likely carried in a concealed manner. It has not been reported that the shooter possessed a Concealed Carry Permit thus violating Virginia law on multiple counts of carrying a concealed firearm without a permit.

It is illegal, immoral and unethical to take a human life without legal justification, as in the case of self defense. That law was broken thirty how many times?

One more or a hundred more can not and will not prevent it from happening again.

The Police, may God have a special place in heaven for them for the work that they do, cannot be everywhere all of the time. These situations will continue to happen no matter how many gunlaws are passed. It is the responsibility, nay I say duty of every American Citizen to repel such actions when immediately confronted with them and if that means using a firearm then so be it.

Are Adult Students mature and competent or not?

It seems odd that students of higher learning are thought to be mature enough to grasp the concepts of Chemistry, Biology, and Juris Prudence, but are too immature to accept the responsibility for their own safety.

As a student I would be outraged at an institution that tells me on one hand; You are bright, young and intellegent, we want a person like you to pay us thousands of dollars to further educate you. Then on the other hand; We don't think you children are old enough, intelligent and mature enough to be trusted with the tools to look after your own well being.

There is not one law that can ever be enacted that will ever prevent what happened at Virginia Tech on Monday.

In a recent article on the Lincolnite Blog Mr. Wilson posed the question what would Lincoln do if it happened here at the Lincoln campus of the University of Nebraska.

A tragedy like this can occur at any time or place. We can wish things like this would never happen, there are steps that can be taken to minimize it when it happens but it can never be prevented from happening.

It should come as no surprise that I believe that allowing legally licensed citizens (students and facualty included) to carry on campus is one of the steps necessary to minimize an occurrence like this when it happens again.

It will suprise some to note that I do not think the firearm is the best or only step that needs to be taken.

A few years ago I mentioned in this Blog something Jeff Snyder, a prominent New York City Attorney told me;

Question: Do you know how people in America train to react to violent situations?

Answer: Then sit in front of their televisions and watch it happen over and over again.

Question: Do you know what happens when American citizens are thrust into violent situations?

Answer: They stand there and watch it happen to them.

We react the way we have trained ourselves to react, and for most of us that is to do NOTHING except stand there dumbstruck and watch it play out around or to us.

From the coverage of the VT events that I have seen I would have to say that Jeff is right.

Not all but some of the students I saw interviewed said that they just stood there unable to believe what was happening.

They were essentially frozen in place with a deer trapped in the headlights look while they were shot, shot at or witnessed someone else be shot. They reacted the way there were trained to react.

They stood there and watched it happen.

I always caution people I counsel on personal protection that your mind is your best weapon. Be cognizant of what is going on around you.

Situational Awareness

Situational awareness can and does prevent a majority of events from occurring. You do not have to believe that it is happening, all you have to believe is that something bad is happening and that you will be safer someplace else and as fast as you can go there.

What If # 1

If you leave a building at night headed to your car in a dark parking lot and things don't look or feel right TURN AROUND AND GO BACK IN THE BUILDING even if you may be armed. No one has anything to prove by proceeding into a potential danger zone, even if you are armed.

What If # 2

If you hear what you think are gun shots do not stand there trying to figure out what is going on or why. Immediately with due haste proceed in the opposite direction even if you are armed.

What If # 3

If you are walking along the street and note some unsavory characters a block or so down on your side of the street change direction or cross the damn street even if you may be armed.

Responsibly Armed Citizens

Responsible Concealed Carry permit holders do not, or should not proceed in the direction of a known threat because they are carrying a firearm.

These responsible individuals know that the firearm is the absolute last resort when all other options of avoidance have failed and the threat of death or grave bodily harm is so imminent that the use of the firearm is the only option left.

I have always maintained and still do that SITUATIONAL AWARENESS is the best tool we have to protect ourselves from violence. If you can see or sense it coming far enough in advance it can be avoided.

People get your eyes of off the damn sidewalk and constantly scan the area around you. Be aware of your surroundings. Go wide around corners especially at night. Stay away from poorly lit areas at any time of the day. Do not make yourself look like a potential victim.

Criminals are more prone to prey on those that appear to be an easy mark. The ones that walk with their heads down or so engrossed in a cell phone conversation that the predator doesn't have to chase his victim, all he/she has to do is wait like a spider for someone to unknowingly walk right into their web.
